Six Steps to Build Your Very Own Rustic Desk

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Installing an innovative and appealing style of furniture could transform your workplace and add oodles of dynamism to your attitude and performance. Rustic furniture has become a hot new accessory and there is an ever growing demand for the perfect rustic ambience. Who could ever imagine that by combining rustic logs and twigs you could create such beautiful chic furniture?

A rustic desk is all the rage these days in corporate circles. The creative craftsmanship and the natural look which it exudes, make the rustic desk a favorite asset in your work area. Its aesthetic appeal can transform your clumsy desk into a luxurious office.

Most spacious office desks can cost you a fortune. Why pay a hefty cost for a piece of furniture when you could make your very own desk at home? Apart from excellent durability, a custom built rustic desk would provide you with ample space and storage facilities; all this and more for a fraction of the cost you would pay if you actually bought one. You don’t have to be a skilled carpenter to construct your own rustic desk. All you need are some tools as most of the materials you buy from your supplier would be chipping in with some of the work. Once you’re done gathering all the items, your rustic desk can be assembled in no time following the simple steps.

Step 1: It is essential to visualize what your work desk would eventually look like. You are looking at a large desk on top with one end secured to the wall. The other end would be resting on top of a two door filing cabinet.

Step 2: The next step would involve purchasing a two drawer filing cabinet. This would allow you to store your files while holding up one end of your rustic desk.

Step 3: Buy a laminated countertop for your new desk. You could find this in the kitchen remodeling section of a home improvement store. There is a wide array of countertops for you to choose from. Ask the salesperson specifically for a six feet countertop. As you are building a rustic desk, you would be better off with a plain interior door.

Step 4: Now proceed to place the file cabinet next to the wall, where you would eventually place your rustic desk. Using the top of the file cabinet as a guide, draw a line on the wall and move the cabinet away from it.

Step 5: Next you should secure the wood strip in such a way that the top of it runs parallel with the line you had drawn previously. Drill a couple of screws in to secure it.

Step 6: Finally rest one end of your desk onto the wood strip and the other end on the file cabinet. Use liquid nails or double sided tape to secure the top of your desk to the wood strip and file cabinet and voila! You now have your very own rustic desk.

How to Select the Right Office Furniture

Monday, July 4th, 2011

If you are thinking about starting up a business or setting up a home office, you will need to pick out some office furniture. Furniture for your office will help to set up a good comfortable work setting to do your work in. There are a few basic pieces of furniture that you will not want to be without in your office.

Set a realistic budget

Before you go for modern office-furniture selection, it is advisable to give respect to your budget. Decide how much money you can afford to spend for sprucing up your office with modern office furniture. Figure out what furniture you will actually need at the minimum. Well, after getting a rough sketch on how much you require to spend on furniture, make a decision regarding whether you will permanently buy it or go for rent/lease. Remember if you are going through a severe budget constraint, leasing office furniture may come as a wise option for you undoubtedly.

Office Desk
Some are tempted to go for big desks but there are disadvantages when we buy big desks. Bigger desks are more likely to have scattered items around. But smaller or regular sized ones are better because we’ll be disciplined to keep our desks neat and managed. Having regular sized office desks with drawers are better because we can keep the files and office supplies inside the drawer. A perfect example of this is the Winners Only Desks. It has cabinets and even a slideable keyboard tray.

Of course, office furniture  that looks great is not only nice, but in many office environments, is essential. You don’t want your place of business to make you look sloppy, tacky, cheap, or just plain lazy. I admit a bit of hypocrisy on this point, as my work area tends to look like a tornado just went through. The point is, find pieces that look good to you and represent the type of feeling you want to portray to your employees, clients, or most importantly, your spouse!

While designing the reception area do not forget the Disabled Discrimination Act. Your reception table should be low enough for a person on wheelchair to communicate with person sitting at another end of the table. These days office reception furniture is designed to comply with the norms and cooperate with the disabled people.

Chairs come covered in leather, synthetic leather, or printed fabric. Obviously, pre-owned office chairs come as is. So it may take some hunting to find chairs made with the right materials and fabric colors. However, the likelihood of finding used chairs to match your office décor is great. Much of the available stock is sitting in dusty warehouses, so you may have to have the fabric cleaned. Still, with the amount of inventory waiting to be picked up at rock bottom prices, your search should not be long.

Recent technological advancements have made office equipment such as desktops, laptops, fax machines and photocopiers much smaller. However, it still remains bulky. One should replace large desks and bulky chairs with lightweight, sleek furniture. The minimalist look is what you should aim for, with smaller workstations and compact computer desks. Lighter is also more cost effective, easier to transport and less expensive to install.

You might also consider buying second hand. Online auction sites can have many good second hand units for sale. You do however have to evaluate a particular unit carefully before deciding to buy. Some may have too many damages.

A final way to save cash on office furniture is to patiently research for cheap furniture models. The truth is that there are a lot of cheaply priced items out there. This is not always because they have poor quality. Some excellent wood furniture units for example are only cheap because they are made of veneer or engineered wood.

Office Desks for Home and Other Considerations for a Home Office

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

Working from home, or telecommuting as many people call it, is a growing trend.  A lot of people have seen the advantages of having a home office.  When you work at home, you don’t have to face the daily grind of heavy traffic to get to the office, you don’t have to prepare office attire, and you don’t have to wake up as early.  By working at home, you can save money on transportation and clothing costs, and more time can be spent on personal and family matters.

But working from home also means that the home employee has to set up a home office.  Working in the living room or dining area can work for some time, but in the long run it can be bothersome, especially if things needed for work are in another room, or if other people at home already.  The noise, the inconvenience of having to go from one room to another, and removing stuff because the kitchen counter or dining table needs to be used for something else can become tedious.  Moreover, in order to work well from home, there has to be a place that the telecommuter can call his or her own, and where he or she is in the right mindset to work without being disturbed or tempted to do anything else.  For these reasons, it is important to set up a home office.

A home office does not need to be in a separate enclosed room. One can select from among a selection of office desks for home available in furniture shops and set it up with a comfortable chair in one corner of a room. Any area, as long as it is quiet and has sufficient lighting can be considered for a home office.  The home worker has to condition his or her mind that this area is strictly for work and no other activity (like eating, leisure reading or web surfing) can be done there.  Household members should also be told to respect the privacy of the area, so no one else should be in the home office space except for the home worker.  It should also be clear that should the home worker be at his or her space, it is assumed that he or she is working, so noise levels should be kept at a minimum.

Selecting furniture for a home office can be a challenge, as there are a lot different types available.  For telecommuters whose job nature is administrative work, the essentials include a computer or laptop, an office desk, an internet connection, a table lamp, and, if possible, a fax machine and dedicated phone line.  Some people prefer to keep their desktop computers in a computer armoire that has more storage space for files and other office supplies.  On the other hand, those who are into crafts such as jewelry, quilt, dressmaking or other handicrafts may prefer to have craft furniture like a craft desk and shelves for storing their materials rather than having an ordinary office desk.  Whether a stay-at-home worker has a computer armoire, craft furniture, or just an ordinary office desk, it is important that their working area is always organized and dedicated to work.
